Is Digital Forensics Science an independent science?
Actual infoRecently, again, in some forums was opened the debate on how different groups access to the activities of Digital Forensics. Specifically, the main grouse is heard that the LE is in some way “separative”, many of their Digital Forensic activities are closed.

“Todays challenge is not to analyze and investigate all data in a case preventive down to the ground, the challenge is to use and to learn from all kind of IT-Disciplines, to get the right trigger in a case for narrowing it down in no time. Criminals and Terrorists can commit crime in a fraction of a second, but the analysis takes month, sometimes years if you have no clear view what to look for. Digital Forensic, IT-Security and Lawful Interception have to go hand in hand to deliver triggers for each of the disciplines, to catch up with the enemy !”

“The idea of an informal working meeting of the digital forensic experts and other specialists, involved in the digital evidence, as it was realized at the DFF Prague 2007 Meeting, was accepted widely.
Prague’s Meeting participants from the different regions of the world brought an idea about necessity of those meetings also in their country or region. I know, that to have an idea is one thing, but realize it is different and not simple task. I was very surprised, when I obtained information, that that was not only ideas. Some people ask me for support in organizing DFF meeting in their region.
That is why I met Andres Wagner, my friend and co-organizer of the DFF Prague Meeting, to talk about the next steps in DFF Initiative. Our main two tasks were: (i) how to support DFF initiatives in other regions and (ii) details of the next DFF 2008 Conference.
I have to say, that Andreas was the first with an idea to spread DFF Initiative more widely. That is why our solution about the next steps of the DFF was simple: the next DFF meeting will be in Arabian Peninsula region in December this year. Very probably it will be in Manama, Capital of Bahrain and meeting will have a wider programme then the last one in Prague. It will be 3 days DFF Conference with three parallel sessions and with the exhibition of the forensic tools and products.”

FTK 2 - is it a new concept?
Actual infoOne of the most important event at DFF Prague 2007 Meeting was the introduction of the FTK 2. Not because of sponsorship of DFF by AD, but because FTK 2 has really new conception. It is, as minimum as my opinion.
Why? I discussed at DFF coffee-break with Johan ten Houten,

Bad Guys and Good Guys
Actual info13. 4. 2007 an interesting thread was published at "cftt@yahoogroups.com", called "defense practitioners". I forgot my web-access ID/PASS, so i am not able to copy this discussion for you (and it could be against the rights of CFTT forum, I think). Shortly - it was about the right of "bad guys" (ie. private forensic experts working for defenders) to participate at CFTT group.
It seems to me, that only some US computer forensic experts have this problem - who is the bad-guy or good-guy.

Why DFF? Why share infromation at all?
Actual infoA 2005 publication from the United States Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT) outlines the case for best practices clearly and succinctly. Although the paper focuses primarily on the application of digital forensic examination under US law, the rationale for instituting and following established and do(edited)entable procedures is worthwhile reading.
